- 800W AC output limit — the cap is on the microinverter's AC output, not the panel wattage. You can oversize panels (e.g. 2×440W) as long as the inverter limits output to 800W.
- PV-only kits — the plug-in route covers panels and a microinverter only. Kits with battery storage are outside the plug-in definition and require a hardwired connection by a Part P electrician.
- No electrician required — self-install is explicitly permitted for PV-only plug-in kits under SI 2026/848.
- No MCS certification required — plug-in kits are exempt from MCS. MCS is only needed if you want Smart Export Guarantee payments (a simplified pathway is expected around April 2027).
- One device per household — current G98 rules limit you to one plug-in device per property (this may be relaxed to one per circuit when G98 is updated).
- G98 DNO notification — you must notify your Distribution Network Operator within 28 days. This is a free notification, not an application — the DNO cannot refuse a compliant installation.
- Applies to England, Wales, and Scotland — not Northern Ireland.

- May show "Non-compliant" on the ENA plug-in register — not because they're unsafe, but because they don't fit the PV-only definition
If you see a well-known brand (e.g. EcoFlow STREAM with battery, Anker SOLIX Solarbank) listed as non-compliant, that's usually because the kit includes storage — not because the product failed a safety test. A battery kit is still legal to own and legally worthwhile; it just needs an electrician-installed connection instead of a plug.
Distribution Network Operator (DNO) Rules
Under G98, you must notify your Distribution Network Operator within 28 days of plugging in:
- One device per household — current G98 rules limit you to one plug-in device per property
- 28-day notification — this is your legal responsibility, not the supplier's
- Free online portal — use myplugin.solar (run by the Energy Networks Association) to notify your DNO with your email, postcode, and device model
- Notification, not application — the DNO cannot refuse a compliant installation
Your DNO is the company that manages the grid cables in your area (e.g., UK Power Networks, SSEN, Northern Powergrid, Scotland & Southern Electricity Networks, etc.). It is different from your electricity supplier.

A compliant kit must also be supplied with a plug approved by a notified body for use with a generating device (a standard 13A plug on its own does not qualify). Other things to look for:
- CE or UKCA marking on the product
- Anti-islanding protection (EN 50549) — the inverter must disconnect within 20ms if grid power fails
- IP55+ rating for outdoor components
- Maximum AC output of 800W / 3.5A
MCS certification is not required for self-installed plug-in kits. MCS only matters if you want Smart Export Guarantee payments, and a simplified SEG pathway for plug-in solar is expected around April 2027.
